Already in June 2022, the Indian Ministry of Transport had updated the regulations for the certification(s) of tyres. At that time, it was about the testing of tyres. Now, on 18 October 2022, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has met on the exact specifications of the marking with the energy efficiency (BEE) logo and adjusted both the size of the marking and the date from which it has to be applied on tyres.
Previously, anyone wishing to import tyres into India only needed AIS certification according to AIS 142. In 2020, the BIS certification according to IS 15633 for passenger cars and IS 15636 for commercial vehicles became mandatory, and last but not least, in 2021 the Energy Efficiency Certification of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) added to this list. The latter also refers to the AIS 142, and in order to provide some clarity, the BEE has now clarified in the Schedule-30 – Standards and Labelling (S&L) programme for Tyres which tests have to be made according to which standards, as well as determining dates and specifications of the various requirements such as marking with the Energy Efficiency Logo of the BEE.
According to the new regulations, tyres must therefore from 1 January 2024 have the logo on the right in the size 75*33 mm² (2,95 * 1,3 in²). The certification and the corresponding marking can also be applied now, but from 1 January 2023, each marking must be paid for (the fee is 1 Indian rupee per tyre, the equivalent of about 0.012 euros).
Some other changes concern errors that have been corrected.
